Hawker Hurricane Mk IIb
The Hawker Hurricane Mk. II is a further development of the famous fighter designed by Sydney Camm.It was created by installing a more powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin XX engine with two-stage turbocharging in a standard cell.
This solution significantly improved the aircraft's performance. The new version, designated Hurricane Mk.IIa and with unchanged armament, was first flown on June 11, 1940, and the first examples entered service with RAF squadrons in August of that year.
At this time, the Hawker company was conducting research into improving the weaponry.
The thick wing allowed the use of cannons and machine guns in various configurations.
Initially, a variant with 12 7.69 mm machine guns in the wings was introduced under the name Hurricane Mk IIb.
Unfortunately, the small caliber of the weapon did not change the effectiveness of the fire, especially against armored targets. Therefore, these machines were later used mainly for bombing raids under the name "Hurribomber".
When the bombs were used, one gun was first removed from above the bomb rack.
Later, the bomb racks were equipped with a slot for empty cartridge cases so that the full armament could be retained.
Over time, it became clear that the aircraft, which was equipped with additional weapons, no longer met the requirements of modern fighter aircraft, despite a more powerful engine.
Together with the cannon-armed Hurricane Mk IIc, these aircraft were used for strafing and bombing ground targets, including during Operation "Jubilee" - the Dieppe landings.
Thanks to the installation of a tropical filter, the “Trop” version was created, which was intended for use in hot climates. The Mk IIb and C aircraft equipped in this way successfully took part in the fighting in Africa and the Far East.
A naval version with a hook for landing on aircraft carriers was also developed.
